Soil
Quality Soil is SO IMPORTANT. Don’t use common commercial soils and fertilizers. (Guilty?? It’s fine. We’ve all been there. Next time, choose better because your plants deserve it!) At Plants by the Pool, we can recommend natural organic soils as a base and adding perlite, vermiculite, worm castings and coco choir to create your own perfect soil.
Soil
Common commercially available soil is a blend of peat moss, pine bark, plant food, perlite, vermiculite, and fertilizers. This is not always ideal for all plants, especially exotic plants. This is why we recommend blending your own soil out of simple ingredients. A natural organic soil is a great place to start for making your soil.
Perlite/Vermiculite
Perlite is volcanic glass with a relatively high water content. It creates a growing medium that promotes root growth and makes aeration of the soil.
Vermiculite is group of hydrated laminar minerals that will not rot, deteriorate, or mold and is odorless, non-toxic, and sterile. Vermiculite is also a great growing medium that promotes root growth and makes aeration of the soil.
Worm Castings
Worms are a plants friend. They digest minerals and nutrients and turn them into a form that plants can use. Worm castings, a fancy term for worm poop, gives the soil a boost that serves as food for your plants.
Coco Coir
Coco coir, or coconut fibre, is the fibrous material found between the hard, internal shell and the outer coat of a coconut. It helps loosen soil up and reduces compaction, ultimately offering better soil structure for roots to flourish.
